Parenting in the New Millennium
Back in the year 2000, as we turned the corner onto a new century and a new millennium, many experts on parenting began to wonder if it was time to look at new ways of raising our children, especially when it comes to managing their behaviour. After all, thanks to the internet and television, kids today simply know more than we did at their age. In fact, by the time they hit the preteen years, they have more information at their fingertips than their parents did on their wedding day.
As well, kids today seem more sophisticated and harder to fool. Often, by the time they start school, they can't be tricked into eating vegetables any more, they aren't buying the whole Santa Clause and Easter Bunny thing and they've figured out how to unblock those "special channels" on cable TV.
So are kids so different today? Are the tried and true child rearing strategies that worked so well for your parents and your grandparents just too old-fashioned to work on your kids? Well, it would appear that parents needn't worry. Kids are still kids and parenting skills haven't gone out of date.
In this presentation, I cover some of the basics in dealing with child misbehaviour and talk about how we often unwittingly play a role in encouraging that misbehaviour. By being conscious about what misbehaviour is trying to tell us, and understanding what the child is trying to accomplish by acting up, we gain insight into how to manage the small everyday problems and keep them from escalating into big problems. And I promise we'll have a little fun along the way too.
